At the time of the Hungerfrod SHooting Tragedy on 19th August 1987, the Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher, was on holiday near Padstow in Cornwall.
A couple of days later, her office made arrangements for her to visit Hungerford to witness the scene and to thank the emergency services. Her office also made contact with Dr Hugh Pihlens at the surgery to ask if arrangements could be made for Mrs Thatcher to meet the families involved (with relatives killed or injured). This meeting was duly arranged with most of the families meeting her quietly in the Vicarage garden. There were, of course, no photographs of this, but Ted Baker, who lived at the time just opposite the Police station in Park Street, took a set of photos of the events he saw (probably 22nd August 1987):
