You are in [Events] [1990 Great Storm]
The Burns' Day Storm (although it was actually on Burn's Night), also known as Cyclone Daria, occurred on 25th-26th January 1990. It was one of the worst gales to hit the UK in 50 years. The area affected by this storm was much greater than the October 1987 gale with many parts of England and Wales badly affected, and extended over much of north-west Europe. Unlike the October 1987 storm it was reasonably forecasted by the Met Office.
About 550,000 people covered by Southern Electric were left without power, 50,000 more than in the 1987 hurricane.
