You are in [Places] [Listed Buildings]

The "List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest" (or "Listed Buildings" for short) changes over the years. Much original work and external inspection of buildings in Hungerford was carried out in 1951, when about 29 buildings were listed. In 1962 a further 65 buildings were added, with a further three in 1970. Follow this link to see the 1951, 1962 and 1970 lists. (We ackowledge the help given by West Berkshire Council on these, Jan 2019).

A printed updated list was produced in June 1984. The list below is based on the 1984 compilation.

The "Listed Buildings" are now available on the internet, which should always be consulted as the definitive listing, at Historic England’s National Heritage List for England. Follow this link for their "advanced search" page, and try entering "Hungerford" in the "Parish" box.  On this site you can search for not just Listed Buildings but also Scheduled Monuments, Registered Parks and Gardens, Registered Battlefields and Protected Wrecks. You can search this by administrative area (or using other search terms such as heritage category, grade, period)

Hungerford parish is shown as having 138 Listed Buildings, 1 Scheduled Monument and 1 Registered Park and Garden (though actually this is just the drive up to the park around Littlecote House in Wiltshire!). This is a remarkable number for a small town. There are three Grade II* entries - St. Lawrence's Church, Chilton Lodge and 24 High Street.
