Please note that many family names have a variety of spellings, such as Wodham and Woodham, Pearse and Pearce, Clisdel, Clisdale and Clidsdall.

Consider alternative spellings for everything! If you are looking for trades, note that you may find "plumber" often spelt "plummer", or "maltster" spelt "malster" in 18th century documents.

Little is yet known about The Chequers in Charnham Street.

1736 (NH) Sun Fire Insurance: Vol. 47/10 Policy No. 71716 19 October 1736: George CHURCH of H. Wilts innholder on his house being the dwelling house of the Chequers Inn in the said town in the tenure of Elizabeth PINNOCK £80.
- And a brewhouse and stable thereto belonging £20.

1773 (NH Berks RO D/EFa T3) Will of George Church, mentions 2 houses in Charnham Street, transferred to John Goddard probably after probate in 1797. Wife Sarah.
