Victor Huntley was born in Hungerford in August 1912 to Elsie Alma Huntley of Church Street. He is not recorded on the School's Roll of Honour and this may indicate that he went to one of the privately run schools in the town.
Nothing is known of his childhood or when the family left Hungerford, all we do know is that he married, as his wife Catherine Maud, is recorded as next of kin and living in Tooting, Surrey. His regimental records show he was living in Buckinghamshire when he joined the army.
At the time of his death he was with 2nd Battalion Royal East Kents (The Buffs) taking part in the battle of El Alamein in 1942. The 2nd Battalion were in the south of the line near El Himeimat when the battle started on the night of 23-24 October. Heavy fighting took place in the early stages of the battle during the attempted advance upon El Taqa with the French in support.
The Buffs suffered heavy losses including some senior officers, in the attack as they were under heavy fire and had enemy minefields to cross.
Among those killed was Victor Huntley, aged 30 who now lies in the El Alamein War Cemetery.
