Hungerford Round Table was formed in 1973, and thrived for many years, supporting and organising many events in Hungerford. Some of the annual events sponsored by the Round Table included a Fireworks Extravaganza and Halloween Party held at Hungerford Town Football Club, a New Year’s Eve Ball in the Town Hall and the Hungerford Carnival.
The Christmas period was a busy time for Round Table members when they would take their Santa Float on a fundraising mission around local villages including Froxfield, Chilton Foliat, Shalbourne, Great Shefford, Inkpen, and Kintbury as well as Hungerford. Some of the collected funds were then used to buy and distribute food parcels to old age pensioners living in Hungerford. The Christmas activities would terminate early in January when members would organise Christmas tree shredding outside the Town Hall.
Funds raised by events hosted by The Round Table also paid for projects such as the installation of new benches in the skateboard park in the grounds of the Recreational Memorial Grounds in Bulpit Lane and the installation of new fencing around the Smitham Bridge Road children’s playground.
40 years later, membership was down to only four members: Roger Ballard, James Weir, Andy Bell, and Barry Dunning. The drop in the number of members had been caused by the increased workloads of members who just couldn’t afford the time to donate to community service. Sadly, after 40 years of loyal and faithful service to the community of Hungerford, The Round Table Club of Hungerford ceased to exist with effect from June 2012.
The Hungerford Carnival which is one of the major fundraising events in Hungerford is now organised by the Hungerford Chamber of Commerce.
