There are many early photographs of aeroplanes on the Common Port Down.

Many of these photographs were taken by Albert Parsons, the prolific local photographer, who joined the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War.

In the 1920s, Alan Cobham, the aviation pioneer, applied to build an airport on the common. The project did not get approval!
